Jury Duty

So a couple of weeks ago I got a letter in the mail summoning me to jury duty.  I wasn't too excited about it since it was on my week off and it was supposed to be a three day trial.  So last Tues morning I had to wait through the selection process which went pretty much all morning....I was number 14 out of 36 people.  They started taking everyone back and interviewing them personally which was taking FOREVER, and I didn't bring a book or anything so I was extremely bored.  It would have taken to late afternoon  to interview everyone but they interviewed me and about five other people and then they came back to tell us who they had selected.  I thought for sure they wouldn't pick me....but lo and behold I was one of the "lucky" ones.  My family joked that I should tell them I was racist or saw dead people or something, but we all were sworn in so I had to tell the truth dang it. :) All in all, it was actually a good experience for me.  I felt pretty cool when they said, "All arise for the jury" whenever we walked in the room.  So basically this girl was trying to sue her former friend from high school for an accident she felt was all his fault.  it happened five and a half years ago, so a long time, but what happened was she got on the back of his Jeep and he said he didn't know she was there, and then she fell off and hit her head and suffered head trauma and has memory problems today as well as losing her sense of taste and smell.  She tried to say he was negligent in his driving because he had his music loud and didn't check his rear view mirror even when he was driving forward.  In order for her to win the 1.1 million dollars that they were asking for, or even any money at all, it had to be what we felt as a jury more than 50% his fault.  The whole time through the trial I kept asking myself what the heck she was doing on the back of his Jeep with nothing to hold on to. And she didn't remember anything about the accident so of course she didn't know why she got on. It took between 6 to 8 seconds by the video they had to even drive out of the parking space in front of him, so she had plenty of time to get off.   Needless to say, she did not get any money.  We all felt bad as a jury that she had to go through so much, but it was kind of her fault for making that decision.  Anyways, it was pretty cool to be a part of it all, even if I did have to be away from Emma for two whole days.  I would do it again, if I had to, but hopefully it won't be for a long long while.
